The tight-knit community of Fairfax is dealing with a heavy cloud of grief right now. People are coming together to mourn the sudden loss of Thomas Feerick. At 58 years old, Thomas was a familiar face who built strong, lasting relationships with everyone around him. His unexpected death has left his family, friends, and coworkers completely heartbroken as they try to process the news.

The tragedy happened on a routine Thursday morning up at the Casella Waste Systems landfill. Thomas was up there working as a hired subcontractor, doing a job he knew well. No one expected a regular workday to turn into a nightmare, but things went wrong incredibly fast. The peace of the morning was shattered when emergency crews got the urgent call.

State troopers say the call came in around 9:40 a.m. regarding an unconscious worker. Thomas had been operating an aerial lift to tear down a section of fencing. While he was working on the high platform, the lift lost its balance. It tipped right over a small embankment, creating a terrifying chain of events.

Investigators later discovered a critical and heartbreaking detail about the incident. Thomas was not wearing a safety harness while he was up on the lift. Because he was unsecured, the sudden tilt proved completely catastrophic. Police determined that he was thrown from the platform either right before or right as it slammed into the ground.

Other contractors working nearby saw the whole thing happen and rushed over to help. They did not hesitate for a second. They called 911 immediately and started trying everything they could to save his life right there on the dirt. Their quick action showed just how much people cared about him on the job site.

Newport EMS arrived quickly and rushed Thomas to North Country Hospital. Medical teams inside the ER fought hard to bring him back, performing every life-saving measure they knew. Sadly, their best efforts were not enough. He was officially pronounced dead later that Thursday morning, leaving the hospital room in quiet sorrow.

State police are treating this purely as a terrible, heartbreaking accident. They do not see anything suspicious about what happened at the landfill. Thomas’s body was sent to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington for a routine autopsy to confirm the exact cause of death. For now, his family is left holding onto beautiful memories and looking for strength to get through the dark days ahead.
