Detroit’s west side is hurting again after another dark night on the highway. Early Wednesday morning, what should have been a simple drive home turned into an absolute nightmare. A burst of gunfire on eastbound I-96 took a young life, leaving a family shattered and a neighborhood asking why.
The young man we lost was Jay Boog. He was a loved member of this community with his whole life ahead of him. Those who knew him say he had a great energy and could light up any room he walked into. Now, his sudden absence leaves a painful, quiet space that his family is struggling to comprehend.

It all went down around 12:51 a.m. near the Outer Drive exit. Jay was riding in a Chevrolet Traverse with two of his close friends. Out of nowhere, bullets started ripping through the doors and shattering the glass of their SUV. The quiet freeway turned into a zone of pure terror in a matter of seconds.
Even though they were hit and bleeding, the survivors did not freeze up. The driver knew they had to get out of there fast. They managed to navigate the bullet-damaged Chevy off the highway and onto local streets. They were racing against the clock to find help.
The SUV finally stopped right outside the Detroit Police Department’s Sixth Precinct on Warwick Road. The vehicle was covered in bullet holes and blood. Officers rushed out to help the victims, but it was already too late for Jay. He was pronounced dead right there at the station.
The other two passengers were rushed to a nearby hospital by emergency crews. Doctors say they are still fighting for their lives. Their families are holding vigil at their bedsides, praying for any sign of recovery. The whole neighborhood is waiting anxiously, hoping they pull through.
State police currently do not have a description of the shooter or their car. Investigators spent hours looking for clues and evidence on the highway near Outer Drive. The lanes were shut down for a long time as troopers searched the dark pavement. They are asking anyone who saw anything to please call them.
The grief in Detroit is heavy right now, but so is the love for Jay’s family. A bright life was cut short by a random act of highway violence. As the police look for answers, friends are holding onto the good memories they shared with Jay. He will be deeply missed, but his name will live on.
