It was supposed to be just another normal Friday drive on Highway 1. The whole tragedy started with something all too common on rural South Carolina roads. A passenger car traveling southbound down Highway 1 suddenly slammed into a deer. The impact was violent, and it set off a horrifying sequence of events that nobody could have predicted or avoided.
Instead of just rolling to the shoulder, the force of that initial collision threw the deer directly into the northbound lane. At that exact moment, a massive tractor-trailer was heading north. The oncoming truck had absolutely no time to react before striking the animal a second time.
The truck driver slammed on the brakes in a desperate attempt to handle the chaos. The massive rig slowed down rapidly in the middle of the highway. But the sudden stop created an immediate and deadly hazard for the vehicles following closely behind.
The SUV carrying Maxie Gainey was traveling right behind that heavy tractor-trailer. With the massive truck stopping so abruptly, the driver of the SUV had nowhere to go. The smaller vehicle crashed violently into the rear of the big rig.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene on Highway 1, but the damage was already done. Chesterfield County Deputy Coroner John James later confirmed the tragic news. Gainey died from the severe injuries he sustained during the heavy impact of the crash.
Right now, local authorities are still trying to piece together every single detail. Deputy Coroner James noted that a forensic autopsy has been scheduled as part of the ongoing probe. For the quiet community of Patrick, a simple drive down a major local route ended in an unimaginable heartbreak.
