Cincinnati just lost one of its toughest legendary lawmen. Simon L. Leis Jr., the famous long-time prosecutor, judge, and sheriff, passed away peacefully on June 27, 2026. He was 92 years old. He had been quietly fighting a tough four-year battle with cancer. His passing marks the end of a massive era for the criminal justice system in southwest Ohio.
Leis spent over 50 years working hard to keep his community safe. He was born right into a legal family, following his father’s footsteps in the local courts. Before he ever put on a legal robe or a badge, he learned strict discipline in the United States Marine Corps. He brought that exact same no-nonsense, hard-nosed attitude straight to his work in Hamilton County.

Back in 1971, he became the county prosecutor and quickly made national headlines. He hated anything he considered obscene or harmful to families. He famously went to war against adult entertainment, targeting Larry Flynt and Hustler magazine. He wanted to clean up the streets, and he did not care who got mad about it.
After his legendary run as a prosecutor, he moved on to become a Hamilton County Common Pleas judge. From behind the bench, he kept demanding total accountability from everyone who walked into his courtroom. He believed the law was there to protect regular people. He never hesitated to throw the book at violent criminals or corrupt officials.
In 1987, he took over as the Hamilton County Sheriff and stayed in that spot for 25 long years. He ran the county jail with absolute order and modernized how the whole department operated. Under his watch, deputies got better training and local police departments started working together much closer. He became the longest-serving sheriff in the county’s history.
His tough approach to running the county sometimes divided public opinion. Some people thought his rules were way too strict, while others praised him for keeping the peace. No matter what side people were on, everyone respected his deep commitment to order. He became one of the most recognizable and influential figures in Ohio’s entire legal community.
Now, the whole region is looking back at a lifetime of dedicated service. Tributes are pouring in from police officers, politicians, and everyday citizens who remember his powerful presence. His long career shaped southwest Ohio’s justice system for decades. He leaves behind an incredible legacy of discipline and safety that people will talk about for a very long time.
