Miranda Maughmer, Ohio: Unbelted mother and toddler lose their lives in a devastating head-on collision while an infant miraculously survives.

A family’s world turned completely upside down on a quiet Thursday evening. Miranda Maughmer was only 25 years old. She had her whole life ahead of her, but it all cut short on a dark stretch of road. Along with her, a sweet 3-year-old child lost their life in a split second.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol reported the crash happened just before 7:35 p.m. Miranda was behind the wheel of her 2023 Kia Forte. She was driving down Bremen Road SE near Lake Road SE in Berne Township. For reasons still unknown, her car drifted right across the center line. It smashed directly into an oncoming vehicle.

First responders rushed to the scene. The impact was devastating. Emergency crews took Miranda to the Fairfield Medical Center. Doctors tried their best to save her. Sadly, her injuries were too severe, and she passed away. The 3-year-old child also succumbed to the terrible collision.

Amidst the heavy grief, a small miracle emerged from the wreckage. An 8-month-old infant was strapped in the back seat. This baby survived the violent crash with only minor injuries. State troopers noted that the little one was properly secured in a child safety seat. That proper care saved the infant’s life.

The driver of the other vehicle, a 2015 GMC Acadia, was 33-year-old Faith E. Irwin from Bremen. She was taken to Fairfield Medical Center for treatment. Thankfully, her injuries were not life-threatening. However, investigators noted a troubling detail. Neither Miranda nor Faith was wearing a seat belt when the crash occurred.

Now, the Fairfield County community is struggling to process the sudden loss. Friends and family are leaning on each other for support.
