A terrible tragedy has shaken a close-knit Texas community to its core. A massive house fire on Ellis Road near U.S. Highway 181 has taken the life of a man who spent years saving others. The victim was a dedicated former local firefighter who spent his career running into danger.
To the folks around town, he went by the name of Ricky. However, his official legal name was Mark Edwards. His sudden and tragic passing has left a massive hole in the hearts of everyone who knew him, especially his fellow first responders.

The scary situation started on a Tuesday afternoon. According to local emergency management officials, the emergency call came in just before 5:00 p.m. Flames quickly engulfed the residential structure, creating a dangerous and frantic scene.
Fire crews arrived at the property within minutes. They worked hard for several hours to control and contain the raging blaze. Mark Edwards was the only person inside the home when the fire broke out.
First responders bravely pushed into the burning house and pulled Mark out. They immediately started life-saving measures right on the lawn, including intense CPR. Emergency workers rushed him to a local hospital, but he sadly died from his severe injuries.
This loss hurts the local firefighting family on a deeply personal level. Many of the brave men and women who responded to the scene had worked right alongside Mark in the past. Watching a friend and former colleague lose his life made the difficult night even harder.
Mark will always be remembered as a guy who lived his life with real courage and kindness. The entire community is standing close by his family during this incredibly dark time. A final funeral service is planned for July 15, and he will be laid to rest at Glenwood Cemetery.
