It was just a normal Tuesday morning before everything went wrong. A regular guy was out doing a completely ordinary chore, completely unaware that danger was lurking right around the corner.

Jermaine Newton was a 47-year-old local who loved his community. He spent his days working hard for the city, dedicating his time to cleaning up illegal dumping and keeping the streets nice for everyone.

Like any devoted pet owner, he started his day early to give his dog some fresh air. They walked along their usual route through the scenic, residential neighborhood of the Oakland Hills.

Around 6:15 a.m., everything changed in an instant near Leona Drive and Old Quarry Loop. Out of nowhere, the peaceful morning silence was shattered by the terrifying sound of sudden gunfire.

Someone attacked Jermaine right there on his everyday path, not far from his own front door. Neighbors heard the shots ring out through the air and immediately called for help.

Emergency responders rushed to the neighborhood just north of Interstate 580 to try and save him. They found him suffering from at least one severe gunshot wound and worked desperately on the scene.

Despite the heroic efforts of the first responders, it was simply too late to save his life. Jermaine was pronounced dead right there on the pavement, leaving behind a heartbroken family and a community searching for answers.
