Sammy Zapata was just 19 years old with his whole life ahead of him. He was a resident of Lubbock, living out the typical days of a teenager in West Texas. That all changed on a warm Friday afternoon when a single driving error cost him everything. It was just past four o’clock when his journey came to a sudden end.
He was driving his car eastbound down FM 2641. The rural roads out here are long and straight, stretching across the flat Texas plains. It seemed like any other weekend kickoff for a young guy. But danger was waiting at the next major crossroads.
As Sammy approached the intersection at FM 179, a stop sign stood in his path. For reasons that investigators are still trying to figure out, his vehicle did not slow down. He went straight through the intersection without stopping.
At that exact moment, another car was crossing through the intersection. Sammy’s vehicle slammed hard into the side of it. The impact was violent, twisting metal and scattering debris across the asphalt.
Inside the other vehicle was 87-year-old Burl Trotter from nearby Littlefield. The crash killed the elderly man right there at the scene. Emergency crews arrived within minutes, but there was nothing they could do to save him.
Sammy was still alive when the first responders pulled up. Deputies and medics from Shallowater and Carlisle worked fast to get him out of the wreckage. They loaded him into an ambulance and rushed him straight to University Medical Center.
Doctors and nurses at the hospital did everything they could to stabilize the teenager. Unfortunately, his injuries were just too severe, and he passed away later that day. Now, two local families are left picking up the pieces after a devastating afternoon.
