It was a night that turned from fun to heartbreak on Lake Pepin. Just after 10 p.m. on Saturday, July 11, the calm waters of the lake were shattered by screams for help. A pontoon boat had capsized, and three people were missing—two of them were part of the fire service family in Wabasha.
The victims were Ashley Monson, 37, Manuel De Angel-Sola, 52, and Nicholas Loechler, 46—all from Wabasha, Minnesota. They were all known in the community, especially Manuel and Nicholas, who were firefighters. Their loss hit hard, not just because they were friends and neighbors, but because they were heroes who put their lives on the line every day.
When the call came in, first responders rushed to Deer Island, where the overturned boat was found. Three people were pulled out alive, but three others were gone. The search that followed was massive, with crews from both Minnesota and Wisconsin working around the clock. Helicopters, drones, sonar gear, and rescue boats were all used in the effort. But despite everything, the three missing boaters were found dead.
No campers or staff from the YMCA Camp were involved, which is a relief, but it doesn’t ease the pain. The community is still reeling, with friends, families, and fellow first responders mourning the loss of three lives that meant so much to so many.
